Updates from Mrs. Forward and Miss Hood’s Class …
January 8, 2020
Happy New Year!
What we are currently learning …
Language Arts (reading and writing):
This term our reading and writing focus is on nonfiction. We will be reviewing nonfiction text features and examining 5 different nonfiction text structures; compare/contrast, description, problem/solution, cause/effect, and order/sequence. We will also be determining the main idea and supporting details in nonfiction passages.
Your child should be reading for at least 30 minutes each evening. This is in addition to independent reading time at school. The independent reading book should travel to and from school every day. Both the at-home reading and in-class reading contribute toward the 40 book challenge goal!
Go Math:
We are currently in the middle of Chapter 5; exploring factors and multiples. We will be finishing up this chapter and moving on to fractions next week.
It is very important that your child be practicing his or her math facts nightly. We are using Xtramath.org to practice. An Xtra Math session only takes about 5 minutes. Repetition is the key to memorizing these facts!
Social Studies/Science:
In Science we have begun a unit on animal adaptations. We will be exploring the many ways animals adapt to survive in changing habitats. Our current read aloud is The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. In this story, a robot learns how to adapt and “be wild” to survive. This provides a great literature connection to our science lessons.
In Social Studies, your child is studying the different explorers who came to this land. Students will learn about the reasons for exploration and also the cultural influences that were left behind.
